CALAMARI
SQUID. Your local tackle shop or fishmonger is likely to be your best
source of supply for frozen calamari. Buy the size you prefer and keep it frozen
until you need it. Invest in a coolbag and keep the bait frozen/chilled until
you are ready to bait up.
Calamari
is one of our favourite baits for targeting the larger cod, bass and rays. Casting
a whole calamari squid a long way can be a huge advantage (even for bass sometimes).
For a whole 4-6" calamari a single Pennell arrangement works best. Pass
the lower hook through the body and into the head then wrap a couple of turns
of the snood around the body before securing the top hook into the front of
the body. Make sure the hook points are exposed. Stuff the whole squid in the
tube and let it rip!
Squid loses its scent quite quickly
so replace the bait every half hour if not touched. Removing the outer skin
before baiting up reveals the white flesh. If your squid looks pink throw
it away - it's gone off! Squid strips make a great addition for any cocktail
bait and when fished on small hooks can prove irresistible for bream and many
other species.
