HARBOUR
RAGWORM. As the name suggests harbour ragworm, maddies or reds can be
found in many creeks, harbours and muddy estuaries. The worms can be dug with
a broad tined fork wherever the worms show their locations by emitting small
spurts of water when the mud is pressed with your boot. Remove all the sand
and mud and then keep your worms in an inch of seawater in your bait fridge.
Only
fine wire hooks are suitable and baiting with the assistance of a baiting needle
can be helpful. Use a multi-hook rig such as a bomber rig in sizes 6 to 1. Combine
threaded on worms and head hooked worms to get a wriggling mass of tails.
Use
5-10 worms on each hook, adding a few new worms onto any untouched baits. Fishing
low water channels in estuaries with harbour ragworm in a DV8 shortie will help
you avoid wading through the mud. No more exploding baits either if you need
to get some distance. It is hard dirty work collecting harbour ragworm so use
a DV8 capsule and be sure the bait is presented perfectly.
