LUGWORM. Common or blow lugworm can be dug from their 'U' shaped burrows using a broad tined fork whilst the larger black or yellow tail lugworm can be pumped from their vertical burrows. Blows from some areas will keep happily in a tray of cool seawater, whilst worm from other areas are best kept in fresh newspaper or vermiculite. Fresh out blacks can be kept in seawater for a few days but are generally gutted and rolled individually in newspaper.

Lugworm can be used on almost any rig and will tempt most species. Small worms on small hooks for flounder, whiting and pout. Ten inch long threads of blacks on 5/0 hooks for cod.
Many anglers have their own preferences for using lugworm. Hook them head first or tail first? Thread them carefully or prick them full of holes? On their own or combined in a cocktail? Fresh out or old, sticky and smelly. Lots of options that all work - sometimes.
