RAGWORM. For many anglers farmed ragworm is the most convenient option. If you have access to ragworm beds you can 'tread' for them. Walk slowly with 4-6" steps and watch for the spurts of water that reveal the worms burrow. This is especially effective for locating king ragworm. Ragworm can be kept in cool seawater or for several days wrapped in clean newspaper.
Rigs with fine wire hooks are best for ragworm. For smaller species use size 4 to 2 hooks baited with a couple of head hooked worms. For targeting bass and dogfish we suggest you use hooks of size 2/0 upwards. Thread one worm on the shank and then head hook another couple of worms on the bend. Protect your bait in a capsule rather than shredding it during the cast.
A head hooked king ragworm tipped with a couple of whites is our favourite bait for targeting early season stingrays off the Sussex and Essex coasts. Finally remember ragworm nip!
