SANDEEL. There are a few areas in the UK where live sandeels are readily available but for the majority of anglers the main source of sandeels is the high quality blast frozen offerings from specialist suppliers such as Ammo which are widely available in tackle shops.
If your plan is to fish for dogfish or whiting then small sandeels fished on a 1/0 bomber or double pulley rig is perfect. For the larger species such as bass, huss and rays step up to a single 3/0 hook fished on a fixed or pulley paternoster. Baiting is simple; Thread the hook through the mouth and out of the tail. No elastic and no need to remove heads or tails if you use a DV8 capsule.
Keep the sandeels frozen until you need them. Defrost them gently in your hands, bait up quickly and cast. Sandeels lose their scent quickly so we recommend changing baits frequently. Chop up the used sandeel and drop it into the capsule with the new hookbait to act as groundbait.
