SLIPPER LIMPETS. This non-native shellfish can often be collected along Southern shorelines following periods of stormy weather. Keep a carrier bag full of slippers (in their shells) in your freezer and then take some with you when you go fishing. Once defrosted, the slippers can easily be pushed from their shells with a thumbnail.
Slippers may be used in bunches or as a tipping bait. If your target is bass then try a bunch of 8-10 slippers close in on a 2/0 paternoster rig. For flounders, whiting, pout and rockling choose a multi-hook flapper of bomber rig with hooks in the 4 - 1 range.
Slippers left to stink in their shells for a week before using produce a powerful scent trail to draw in the fish. Sometimes Autumn and Winter species will feed on slippers to the exclusion of all other baits. It is a useful tip to put some free offering of slippers into the capsule as groundbait to help draw fish to your hookbaits.
